I apply parametric design and model making skills to create geometric paper reliefs.

As a visual artist with a background in architecture I am fascinated by parametric design, classical geometry and architectural composition and crystallography. I embrace paper as an universal medium, very potent in its versatility. My process is a twofold method the first stage of which is the design phase dwelling in the nearly limitless virtual environment. I then create the pieces meticulously by hand confronting the designs with my physical and skill limits.

In my Pleats series, I created four small-scale curly compositions each made of one single sheet of paper, swimming in a sea of negative space. Combined with a soft sidelight, these actually basic reliefs create a surprisingly dynamic dialogue between light and shadow.
I also want to present my pieces in a lively manner creating short relaxing time lapses with light and shadows star as the main characters.

You can purchase my original paper reliefs through Etsy, download the full resolution wallpapers for your phone, tablet and computer here and have a look at my newest geometric explorations on Instagram.

Pleat1

Squeezed dramatically in its center and spreading calmly towards the sides, with an expressive ground plan and calm pyramids. This elusive translucent textile-like water creature always finds a way.

Pleat2

This closed-shaped pleat is firmly attached. Enclosed in its expressive spiky shell resides something vulnerable and shy.

About the Process

Pleats is a series of sharp triangular folded paper reliefs, on a softly defined ground plan. In the four pieces, I examine four different configurations of these boundary curves creating two open and two close shapes.

First I defined the planar boundary curves and to 3-D curves limiting the height of the pyramids. Then I subdivide them an interconnect their segments, this is how the blueprint of the pleat is creating. I fold the final corrugated composition using a single sheet of archival paper.

I am generally interested in defining an idea by a set of parameters and logical rules. I use these to create a tiny universe and research the possible forms this universe allows to exist. I set out to create a series of smooth softly flowing compositions with a natural inner order. The resulting pieces remind me of some tiny ocean lifeforms formed by the strict rules of physics and evolution.

Pleat3

Concave curves fitted one into the other define this piece´s open ground plan. Delicate in the mail section and firm on the extremities.

Pleat4

The final piece uses two S-shaped curves as well as a rhythmical variation of wider and thinner faces. The crystals morph from irregular pyramidal to tetrahedral shapes. Closed in purposeful.
